Maanum's Named Farm Family Of The Year

For the Maanum family, farming is much more than a way to pay the bills-it is a way of life.

Now in its third and fourth generations, the Maanum family farm has been a staple in the rural Farwell area for over 100 years.

The original house that Lyle Maanum's grandpa built when he purchased the homestead between 1908-1909 still towers over the farm site. In its shadows the Maanum family scurry across the farm site getting ready to feed cattle, hogs and prepare for the fall harvest.

No changes for 2010-2011 activities

During a work session Thursday night, the Minnewaska School Board brainstormed about the problems, possible solutions and criteria for cutting some activities for the 2011-2012 school year.

According to Minnewaska's Activities Director Bill Mills, approximately $30,000 must be found for the district to continue to offer 20 activities - everything from speech to baseball - in the 2011-2012 school year. Without an additional $30,000, cuts must be made to the activities budget.

The board hosted a public informational meeting last month where dozens of people spoke out to against the potential cuts.

Glenwood, Long Beach to choose arbiter to help determine sewer charges

The cities of Glenwood and Long Beach last week agreed to seek an independent arbiter to help resolve a disagreement over Glenwood's calculated charges for treating Long Beach sewage.

Both cities have been working to resolve the sewer treatment issue since a 20-year joint-powers contract expired in 2008.

Long Beach Councilmember Terry Duhn addressed the Glenwood City Commission last Tuesday to suggest that Glenwood was charging Long Beach about twice the amount that it should charge for sewer treatment. He provided Glenwood commissioners with flow numbers from 2007-2009. Carrying the numbers through 2010, Duhn's figures estimated that Long Beach was responsible for about 5 percent of the sewage flow to the Glenwood treatment plant, but was about 11 percent of the total expenses if he used the city's calculation of $4.61 per 1000 gallons treated from Long Beach. In his figures, Duhn explained that about 209,032,000 gallons would be treated and about 9,803,000 of those gallons came from Long Beach (or about 5 percent of the flow).

City sets public hearing for rezoing property

During their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, July 12, the Starbuck City Council conducted the following business:

• Heard from Wayne Anderson who is running in the November election for the office of Pope County Recorder.
Anderson said one of the reasons he chose to enter the race was his belief that the offices of Pope County Assessor and Pope County Recorder could be combined into one office. Anderson is currently the Pope County Assessor.

• Approved scheduling a public hearing for Thursday, July 29 at
6 p.m. to discuss rezoning the property located at the intersection of Highway 28/29/114 from residential to commercial. The public hearing will be followed by a special budget meeting.

• Approved, by a 3-1 margin with Mayor Steve Dinsmore voting in dissent, giving Mike Moen 15 days to be in compliance with the city fence ordinance. If the fence is not in compliance within 15 days, the council said it will follow the city ordinance on possible penalties.

Veterans exhibit re-opened at Pope County Museum July 21

Community invited to open house

The Pope County Museum will host an open house on Wednesday, July 21, to re-open the exhibit in tribute to Pope County residents who have served our country in the armed forces. The military service wall is comprised of over 1,500 photographs of Pope County veterans and active duty personnel, including over 350 new photographs.

Veterans from every conflict since the Civil War are represented, and each one has ties to Pope County. One of the recent additions to the wall is Peder S. Reque, who took part in Sherman's March to the Sea in the Civil War before moving west to become Pope County's first resident Lutheran pastor.
