Much of the equipment and focus at the learning center is geared toward younger children from the ages of 2-5, since most of the other playground equipment at Minnewaska West is meant for older students. With the younger students in mind, much of the equipment is smaller and not as high off the ground and features games that even the youngest students would enjoy. In addition to a sand box and playground, the outdoor learning center features a water table, outdoor chalkboard, climbing wall, raised flower bed as well as a number of other items, the outdoor learning center will truly have something for everyone.

The learning center will primarily be used by the Minnewaska Area early Childhood Special Education and Head Start collaborative classroom, Minnewaska Early Childhood Family Education, Thinking Big and the Rainbow and Rhymes Nursery School, and could also serve as space for a county-wide special Early Childhood events.

The center was made possible by contributions from Gladys Ness Brang Foundation, Otto Bremer Foundation, Glenwood Rotary, Glenwood Fire Department, First National Bank, Runestone Electric Association, Knights of Columbus, United Way of Douglas and Pope County, and Terrace Sportsman Club.

The climbing wall and swing set equipment at the center was made possible through Head Start from the Prime West Health Community Health Reinvestment Grant. Pederson also said a special thanks goes to Jerry Kerkvliet of Starbuck Construction, the students and staff of the Starbuck School, Starbuck Cement Products, Randy Pederson family, and the families of Mindy Kuehne, Stephanie Kuehne, Deb Holmes and Jeni Wutzke.
