Helbing Collection of Native American Arts & Crafts to conclude on Saturday, Dec 6th
Ann Grandy, collections staff person at Pope County Historical Society, presents the concluding lecture in the 2008 series of programs on the Helbing Collection of Native American Arts & Crafts on Saturday, December 6, 1:00. The lecture will be part of the Historical Society's Christmas Open house. There will also be a bake sale from 12-5:00.
Ann's work in the Helbing collection inspired the lecture series this year. She has done extensive new documentation on items in the collection. “I am excited to share some of the many interesting things I have learned in the course of researching the Helbing Collection. We have an amazing treasure here in Pope County!”
Grant funding from Tastefully Simple, Minnesota Historical Society and the Lake Region Arts Council has allowed PCHS to refurbish the exhibit cases and lighting in this exhibit area. They have also updated the labeling throughout the exhibit. Many pieces also received conservation treatments. The most dramatic of these treatments was polishing the silver jewelry. In consultation with MHS conservator, Bob Herskovitz, a gentle cleaning slurry of fine calcium carbonate powder was used to restore the luster of classic and contemporary pieces by Kenneth Begay, Ambrose Roanhorse and others.
Ann's presentation will highlight favorite artifacts in the collection with special stories of the artist, region or cultural significance. Due credit must be given to Cleora Helbing for her foresight to collect such a broad representation of Native American craftsmanship. From student work to fine art, her collection illustrates a compelling story of tradition and adaptation.
The 2008 lecture series has been financed in part member contributions and with funds provided by the State ofMinnesotathrough the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission's Grants Program.
