Following high school, Rosella attended beauty school and while Richard was still stationed in San Diego, the two began discussing their future and possible marriage.

“We decided we were going to get married in the summer sometime,” said Beveridge.

While the two had been discussing a summer wedding, the plans began to change when Rosella went on a cross country trip one July to visit Beveridge in San Diego.

“She came out to visit me and we decided to get married on her birthday in December,” he said.

Upon briefly returning to the same community in which they first met, Richard and Rosella were married on December 23, 1939. The service itself was not big, in fact Beveridge said the two didn’t get married in a church.

“(There was) no marriage ceremony, we just went to town and got married,” said Beveridge.

Following the wedding, the two attended a small party in the country with all the neighbors and family members before heading out to their honeymoon, which began in the Minton Hotel in Glenwood, and ended at their home in San Diego.

After climbing the ranks in the Navy, eventually becoming a Captain, Beveridge retired from the Navy in 1959. Following their return to Minnesota eight years later, Beveridge taught physics at a few schools including one year at Cyrus. He eventually became a substitute teacher at a variety of school districts in the area.

While Beveridge was teaching, Rosella was in charge of the home and the couples three children. Beveridge said “she did everything.” He said she not only kept track of the home, but made all the meals, sewed clothes for the children, and made drapes from hand.

Through the years, Beveridge said the two have always gotten along by doing the things they enjoy to do, while making sure to find plenty of time with each other. Beveridge, who is now 93, and Rosella, who will be turning 90 on Dec. 23, have been blessed with three children as well as five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

On their 69th anniversary this week, Beveridge said they won’t be doing anything special, yet will just make sure to spend time together, as they had almost every day for 69 years.
