Senior Co-Captain Collin Jergenson was the next Laker on the mat at 152 pounds. He won his first match 10-5 against Tim Bartness of New Richland. He moved on to wrestle in the quarter finals, losing to Jake Braaten of Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale 11-5. He then had to work his way back through wrestlebacks, winning his next match against Sean Huls, of Pierz, 15-0. Jergenson defeated Justin Buss of Chatfield 5-4, then lost the next match in overtime to Mark Evjen of Hayfield. He defeated Stephen Erlandson 13-4 in the final round, ending his high school career and placing fifth. He ends the year with a 40-2 record. Junior Co-Captain Brandon Manderschied began his competition in the 189 pound class against Thomas Uttermark of MACCRAY in a close match, but was defeated 2-1. He would also need his opponent to win in the next round to continue competing. Uttermark won on Thursday, putting Manderschied back in the competition, where he defeated Wade Moenkedick of Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale 4-2. He then moved on to the wrestlebacks losing another close battle to Brian Anderson, of Redwood Valley, 2-0. Manderschied placed sixth and also has a chance to compete next year in the state competition. He ends his year with a 33-6 record. Senior Co-Captain David Cowen, at 215 pounds, took the mat late Wednesday to win his match against Taylor Mattison of Red Rock Central 6-4. He then went on to a close defeat at the hands of Evan Stock of Yellow Medicine East, 4-3. In the wrestlebacks, Cowen faced Mat Willner of Blue Earth, losing 7-0. He ends the year with a 30-10 record. Congratulations to all Minnewaska Area wrestlers on a great season. |
