Starbuck Dragon Boat Festival To Feature New Division

Vaadeland said the new division came from discussions with the Dragon Divas, a dragon boat team stationed in Minneapolis, who inquired about having a special division for breast cancer survivors. The division will be open to all breast cancer survivors, and Vaadeland said the goal is to get 4-6 teams to participate in the special division.

The hope is the special division will attract another nationally known breast cancer survivor dragon boat team to make the trip to Starbuck. In addition to the Dragon Divas, there are several Minnesota based dragon boat racing teams comprised of breast cancer survivors.

Locally, anyone who has suffered from breast cancer, and would like to be part of the special division, is encouraged to contact Vaadeland at the SACC office at 239-4220.

The chamber will make a list of breast cancer survivors to help make up the 16-20 person team.



Deadline approaching

Currently more than 30-teams have signed up for the Second Annual Starbuck Dragon Boat Festival scheduled for August 7-8. Last year's dragon boat festival featured 19-teams.

The early-bird cost for registering a team of 16-20 paddlers is $550. However, the registration fee will rise to $650 after April 15. A person can hold the spot for a team for just $100, and pay the remainder of the registration fee at a later date.

In addition to the expanded line-up of teams currently in place, the race weekend will feature a variety of games for the younger crowd. Vaadeland said the kids games will see an expanded amount of offerings this year as well.

All of the kids games, as well as the race weekend, will once again be featured in the Starbuck City Park.

Corporate sponsorships

available

There are a few corporate sponsorships available for the Starbuck Dragon Boat Festival.

The corporate sponsorships are $1,500 which includes a team registration, mentions in 25 percent of all radio/newspaper ads, PA mentions at the festival, and one 4x8 banner on the race site.
