Hasselberg teed off about an hour earlier than Roering or Ostrander, and word began to filter back to the spectators that Hasselberg had struggled on her final nine. Parents, family and fans kept scores in their heads as it became clear the individual title would come down to the wire. As the final two groups containing Allie and Emily played the final hole it was known that Hasselberg finished at 150, six over par. Allie missed a tricky five-foot birdie putt on 18 to finish at 148 for the two rounds. Emily teed off on the final hole at two over par for the tournament. With Allie in the group in front of her it wasn't completely clear what she needed to make on the hole, but it seemed a par should get the job done. After another long, accurate tee shot, Emily knocked her second shot just short of the green on the par 5 hole. A chip shot and two putts later Emily holed out and looked at her dad to see how she stood. A smile and a thumbs up from dad told her all she needed to know, and a smile broke across her face. That smile wouldn't soon leave as the congratulations, hugs, and festivities followed the exciting conclusion to another complete success for the Minnewaska girls. The key to victory for Emily was her ability to dominate the shorter back nine at The Ridges. She shot two under par 34s on both days. That total was six better than Ostrander and eight better than Hasselberg. The Lakers appear poised to claim a fifth straight title next year, with Allie Ostrander and Sarah Roering being favorites to battle for the individual title. Job well done Laker girls! |
