Taxpayers in the Minnewaska Area School district will pay about 5 percent more in property taxes to the school district next year.On December 15, the school board unanimously approved the 2010 payable 2011 levy at $2,999,581.34 - that's $160,937 or 5.5 percent more than last year's levy which was set at $2,838,644.21. The proposed levy increase is linked to local property values and debt service increases, according to Superintendent Greg Ohl. The school district's 2010 levy is based on the county's adjusted net tax capacity - the overall property values - which are based on 2008 figures. Across the state, the average adjusted net tax value was up 5.8 percent. The levy increase is also attributed to an $81,000 increase in the district's debt service. The increase will reportedly cover the district's post-retirement benefits commitments. |
