The Starbuck City Council moved swiftly on Friday afternoon to hire a new city clerk/treasurer to replace the retiring Marilyn Mortenson.

After interviewing five of the 26 applicants Friday morning, council members called an emergency meeting Friday afternoon to officially offer the job to Pope County Deputy Treasurer Diana Schlief.

While Larry Noyes said there were a number of quality candidates who applied and interviewed for the job, he said "this one we feel is best qualified for the job," given her previous work experience.

Councilman Tom Goracke, who was also a part of the interview process, agreed that there were a number of qualified candidates but "she stands out," given her previous work experience and interview.

Schlief who has since accepted position will begin her work at the Starbuck City Office later next month.
