Busy Summer Sees A Busy Fall

Waterfest (6th grade)
fall_2011_058_250The GHES sixth grade class spent Friday, September 16th at Water Fest in Glenwood.
The kids loved learning about water conservation from a Science Museum presenter, creating human bubbles, holding carp, and learning about the sea perch, the water cycle and invertebrates.

Garden Harvest
The fourth, fifth and sixth graders spent some time in the garden last week before the frost hit the area. They were able to harvest some potatoes, broccoli, green beans, squash, zucchini, tomatoes and green peppers. The large tomatoes and green peppers were made into salsa and served with chips to all the students for a snack. The students really enjoyed the fresh salsa, and they now know how to make it at home! The rest of the vegetables have been offered during lunch. Cherry tomatoes were a big hit and some of them didn’t make it to the lunchroom because the pickers had a snack out in the garden. Many children were surprised to find out that you can eat green beans, yellow squash and zucchini without cooking it, and adding a little ranch dressing really makes it taste good. We are looking forward to harvesting more squash and some pumpkins.

Trip to the State Park
The students and staff, with some help from parent volunteers, spent a beautiful fall day at Glacial Lakes State Park on Friday, Sept. 23rd. They participated in many different activities led by staff, park rangers, and community volunteers, including Robyn Trott, Alex Carols, Luan Johnsrud, Amy Schnoes . The station topics included pollinators, leaves, caught on camera, oh deer habitat game, turtle hurdles and canoeing. The students had a picnic lunch and ended the day roasting marshmallows and making s’mores.

University of MN-Morris Students
This fall each teacher in grades K-2 is hosting a UMM Elementary Education student in the classroom. The UMM students are completing their junior fall practicum and will be in the classroom for a minimum of 40 hours this semester. The practicum is designed to provide the college students with the opportunity to teach a mini-unit in reading and math, and work with both the teacher and the students in the classroom. We are excited to have this partnership opportunity with the university.
