Glacial Hills Gazette  2-1-12

xmas-party_2011-12-204_500-2454th-6th Graders Enjoy Luthercrest:  On Jan. 19-20 the GHES 4th – 6th graders, along with Mrs. Poegel, Mrs. Balog, Mrs. Mathias, Mr. Harrison, and Mr. O’Neill, spent two days and one night enjoying the environment at Luthercrest near Alexandria. They participated in more than 12 different activities including: tree identification, pioneer challenge, the pond in winter, Native Americans, Alpha Wolf game, bears, ecosystems, animal tracking, and winter survival in the wilderness. All of the students enjoyed the survival challenge the most.  They were divided into groups of 4, and given a shovel, a tarp, a length of rope, a can, and 3 matches. They had 20 minutes to build a fire, keep it going long enough to melt a can full of snow, and build a shelter. The also made dream catchers, built fires with flint and steel, and got to visit with the live animals. The trip was a huge success, even though the 19th was the coldest day of the winter with temperatures of -17!

K-3rd Graders travel to St. John’s to see Winnie-the-Pooh Onstage:  On Friday, Jan. 20th the students and staff rode the bus to St. John’s University to see the live performance of Winnie-the-Pooh. The trip was funded by money raised selling pizzas. Students commented that it was fun to see the characters on stage, and it was different than watching on TV or at the movies.

This month orders are due on Thursday, Feb. 16th and can be picked up on Thursday, Feb. 23rd.

I Love to Read Month: February 1st kicked off “I Love to Read” Month with Wacky Wednesday. The staff surprised the students by coming to school in wacky dress, and he teachers shared Dr. Suess’s story, “Wacky Wednesday” with their classes. The students also noticed that some wacky things had happened overnight and came to school to discover items in the wrong places, pictures upside down and sideways, and classrooms all mixed up! The month will be full of activities to celebrate reading. Please take time to read with a child!
