From the Glenwood Herald, July 1, 1910

Now that the state convention is over and the lake flies have left us we might begin to talk about that it is quite hot.
There will be a fourth of July celebration at the old Billehus farm 6 miles south of Glenwood next Monday.  Everything that can will be done to give all who come a pleasant time.
The popping of fire crackers now and then reminds us that the Fourth of July is near.
A.M. Huset of Lake Johanna was in Glenwood last Wednesday accompanied by F.M. Kjos.  Mr. Huset was formerly engaged in business in Glenwood.  He says that he comes to Glenwood only twice a year.  In April he comes to get his assessors books and in June he returns it.  He has now been assessor for 14 successive years.
Charley Johnson and a crew of men have been busy since Monday of last week building a cement bridge on Minnesota Avenue at the foot of Soo hill.  Mr. Johnson has put in a number of cement bridges in Glenwood and has done very satisfactory work on all of them.  The bridge that he has just completed is the largest one.  It is 103 feet long and the opening is 4 feet by four and a half high.  The retaining walls are 20 feet high by 20 feet long.  Mr. Johnson procured a new cement mixer before starting on this job that is a great improvement over the old ones.  It is called the Advance cement mixer.  In this machine it is not necessary to measure out the sand and the cement in order to get the right proportion as the machine does this work itself.  Mr. Johnson expects to finish his part of the work on this bridge today.
There has been quite a bit of talk this week about bicycle riding on the sidewalks.  Quite a number of complaints have been made to Constable Sawyer who has promised to do his best to put a stop to it.  There is a village ordinance forbidding bicycle riding on the sidewalks.  Quite a serious accident happened last Sunday evening when Mrs. Christ Sather and her daughter were knocked down by a bicycle rider.  They were so severely injured that they have been confined to their bed since.
The Sunday School of the Lutheran church will have a picnic on the Fourth of July.  The place will very likely be Halvorson's point.  The whole congregation is invited to be present.  Each family is expected to take their own dinner along.  Coffee and refreshments will be furnished at the grounds.  The pupils will compete in races and other contests for which prizes will be given.  The best and most convenient way of getting to the picnic grounds is to go by boat.
The Pope County Historical Society is pleased to announce a lecture on summer cabins by architect & author, Dale Mulfinger, Saturday, July 17, 2pm.
Remember FREE ADMISSION to the museum this summer.
