From the Glenwood Herald October 5, 1911
Mrs. John Cooley took first prize at the fair on a plate of six Tetopsky apples raised near her residence in Glenwood. They looked fine, and their taste is as good as their looks as we can testify as Mrs. Cooley presented one of these apples to the Herald. A number of farmers south of town who insured their buildings in a cyclone insurance company last fall, now find that they have been buncoed according to the statement of some of them. They were promised at the time the representative of the company was here that the rate would be a $1.00 a thousand per year. Now when the bills for the premiums come in they find they are charged a much higher rate. In view of the fact that these farmers have all had poor crops this year, they are very much disgusted with the treatment that this insurance company has given them. Train 107 on the Soo Line ran into a string of box cars which had been left on the main track at Maple Lake last Saturday afternoon, and arrived in Glenwood several hours late. No serious damage was done, but the engine on 107 lost its head light and pilot. What will probably score as great or even greater success than did “Queen Esther” or “All the Comforts of Home” will be the musical comedy “The Girl With The Orange Hair” which will be staged at the new village hall Friday and Saturday, October 13th and 14th, by E.J. Boomer of the Odon Circuit of Mason City, Iowa., under the auspices of the men of the Union Congregational Church. About fifty home people are participating, and we are assured of a good time. S. E. Wright has rented the north store room on the first floor of the new Furtney building and will use it as a hall for moving pictures. He has also purchased 75 chairs and otherwise made arrangements to begin on Tuesday evening, October 17. Mr. Wright will have this hall open three days of the week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. He says the shows he will show will be clean and up-to-date. Once in a while he will introduce features of a local nature. -- Pope County Historical Society 809 South Lakeshore Drive Glenwood, Minnesota 56334 320-634-3293 |
