Hetteen Cup snowmobile championship, vintage sled show roars into town this weekendApproximately 75-100 retro sled racers are in pursuit of the coveted Hetteen Cup Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. on Lake Minnewaska in front of Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood. The Main Event culminates the entire vintage snowmobile racing season for racers from across the region; there are five vintage snowmobile racing associations in Minnesota that host races throughout the winter. But it all comes down to who can claim the coveted Hetteen Cup - named for Edgar Hetteen "The Father of Snowmobiling." A whopping $500 and the cup will be awarded to the driver with the highest point totals from the top three payout classes. An awards ceremony will be held one hour after the day's races wrap up. Local race committee members say they hope spectators of all ages come out to the race to check out the action. Lakeside Ballroom is The Main Event headquarters where people can eat, drink and watch the half-mile, oval race track action from the heated building. An announcer will provide play-by-play action of each race. For those who choose to catch the race and a little fresh air, there will be observation areas outside the ballroom, too. Swap meet, show, volunteers, admissionA swap meet and vintage snowmobile show will also be available in the ballroom parking lot. Anyone with a vintage snowmobile - restored or original - is welcome to enter their sled in the show at no charge. A People's Choice Award will be presented to the owner of the crowd's favorite sled. Event organizers are still in need of volunteers to help sell tickets, monitor the racing area perimeter, line up racers in the staging lanes and other tasks. To volunteer, call the Glenwood Chamber office at 634-3636. Admission to watch the races is $5 for adults, $3 for youth age 13-17 and kids 12 and younger may enter free of charge. The alternate date for the race is Sunday, March 7. Local broadcasting outlets will advise the community if the race is moved to Sunday. |
