Cyrus 6th Grader In Final Competition

Benjamin Goldstein, a sixth grader from Cyrus Math, Science and Technology School, is one of five region spellers who will advance to the Multi-Region State Spelling Bee on Tuesday, March 9. The event will be held at the Bigwood Event Center with all participants competing for the opportunity to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Goldstein qualified for the state meet after finishing in the top five of the Lakes Country Service Cooperative Region IV Spelling Bee on February 23.

Danielle Nicholson, an eighth grader from Hawley, won the Region IV Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the word "angst." A total of 30 people competed in the region meet.

"All of the students demonstrated such poise and maturity along with their excellent spelling skills," said Susan Ward, spelling bee coordinator for Lakes Country Service Cooperative in a release last week. "It was impressive to watch as they requested the definition of a word, or the origin of a word, and then proceeded to nail it.These students will represent Region IV very well. I am hopeful that one of our region students will once again earn a trip to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C."

In addition to Goldstein and Nicholson, three other regional spellers will advance to the state meet. They include: Austin Lynnes, an eighth grader from Pelican Rapids; Cole Carignan, a sixth grader from Prairie Wind Middle School in Perham; and Peter Hagen, an eighth grader from Osakis.
