27th Annual Lefse Dagen will be held on May 15th Twenty-seven years after Starbuck etched its name in Norwegian folklore by creating the World's Largest Lefse, the Starbuck Depot will commemorate the event by hosting Lefse Dagen XXIV. The annual open house, which is held on the same grounds of the record-setting accomplishment, is set for Saturday, May 15.Throughout the event, the Starbuck Depot and Starbuck School Museum will be open to the public, as will the new Skoglund/Ness building which houses the former Standard Lumber office, Dr. Giesen display, and the old Starbuck Theatre equipment. The buildings will be open for display from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. In addition to the open houses, Lefse Dagen will pay tribute to the Norwegian delicatessen which shares its same name by having a "Roll Your Own Lefse" course in the Starbuck Depot. The course will get underway at 11 a.m. and Jeannie Pladsen and Diane Pederson will be on hand to help people learn how to roll out lefse of their own. Live entertainment will begin at 10 a.m. with "The Norskies" and will also feature Glacial Hills Elementary School students and Sherm Syverson throughout the day. A rummage sale will also be held on the Depot grounds beginning at 8 a.m. The inspiration for Lefse Dagen came from baking the World's Largest Lefse on the Starbuck Depot grounds during the Starbuck Centennial in 1983. A team of eight men baked the huge lefse which measured 9'8" in diameter and weighed 75 lbs. Larry Kittelson is the lone survivor of the team which also included: Maurice Amundson, John Gorder, Tilford Jergenson, LuVerne Jorgenson, Earl Larson, Chuck Wahlquist, and Maurice Walline. The men were assisted by Audrey Amundson and Joyce Wahlquist who served the giant lefse to the crowd. |
