Old favorites and new sensations at the Pope County FairIn celebration of its 125th anniversary, the Pope County Fair is bringing in some new attractions, while keeping the time-honored traditions in tact. The new addition of monster trucks at the Pope County Fair grandstand promises to be a smash hit. The monster truck show will be held Saturday, August 6 at 7 p.m. Before the show, the monster truck pit part at 6 p.m. offers fair-goers the opportunity to take pictures with the trucks, get autographs from the drivers and even take a ride on a monster truck for only $5. Another new grandstand attraction this year is the draft horse pull. This glimpse into another time fits with the fair's celebration of its 125th anniversary. The draft horse pull will be Thursday, August 4 at 6:30 p.m. There will be a farm class for local pullers and live music by Pure Country. The 125th Annual Pope County Fair is the first week of August from August 3-August 7. In honor of the celebration, there will be 125th anniversary souvenirs including can koozies, backpacks and coffee cups. This week is filled with a family-friendly schedule of events. There's something for everyone-from cheese curds and a demolition derby to crafts and livestock exhibits. Tens of thousands of people attend the Pope County Fair each year. Pope County Fair Board Member Greg Weidauer said, "You look forward to the fair with anticipation. It is almost a nervous feeling ... Then at the fair, you catch up with so many of your friends and neighbors." He said that catching up with people who you haven't seen in a long time is one of the highlights of the fair. Weidauer said some of his favorite parts of the Pope County Fair are 4-H livestock shows. "With the kids showing. I am always excited about the livestock shows," said Weidauer. "Those kids have spent a tremendous amount of time working before they show their animal." County fair schedule highlights - Wednesday, August 3 • The fair starts on Wednesday with the opening of the exhibits and the carnival. There is also a carnival can drive special, if you bring three canned goods, you can get three armbands for only $30. - Thursday, August 4 • Thursday is senior citizens day and will feature a senior's meal at the little red barn at 11:15 a.m. with music from Pure County Band on the free stage. The outstanding Pope County senior citizen program will follow the meal. The draft horse pull begins at 6:30 p.m. - Friday, August 5 • Friday is kids day. Pony rides will be offered from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for only $3. The reptile and amphibian discovery zoo show will start on the free stage at noon and again at 3 p.m. The truck and tractor pull will start at 6 p.m. in the grandstands. -Saturday, August 6 • Saturday is armed serviced day. It is also the day engines were roar and metal will crunch as monster trucks rage in the grandstands. The pit party starts at 6 p.m., followed by a monster truck show at 7 p.m. -Sunday, August 7 • The popular demolition derby will be held this year at 1 p.m. on Sunday. It will be the second year that the derby includes a combine derby. Old iron, trucks, 80's and newer and compacts are the other divisions of competition. |
