The Annual Carnival Was A Huge Success!
2010 Carnival Photos
Great weather, good food and that old neighborhood feeling all contributed to the carnival's success
Thank you to all who came out and supported us by purchasing a raffle ticket, having dinner or enjoying a game or two. We appreciate your continued support of our mission.
The Dunk Tank was a roaring success. Mrs. Mathias, Mrs. Giese, Mr. Harrison and Mr. Kennedy all took a turn, and thanks to the excellent aim of several students got wet. The 15 dozen cupcakes on the cakewalk were also a hit. Mark and Mary Kay were kept busy with horse rides and the petting zoo, and the staff had fun directing the game stations.
Thanks to the Dairy Association carnival goers enjoyed an ice cream cone. A bike was donated by the Cayo family and that raised over $100 for the school. All the raffle prizes were awarded, see below for the complete list of winners. Thanks, again, for your support. |

St. John's Lutheran Church near Starbuck, MN host discussion about LCMC
LCMC Forum on Sunday, January 17th at 2:00pm about 50 people from eleven congregations gathered at St. Johns Lutheran Church, rural Starbuck. It was an informational forum on LCMC – Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ. Mrs. Anne Gran, of Garfield, who is on the LCMC Board of Trustees was the presenter. She was assisted by her husband Pastor David Gran of St. Lukes in Garfield and St. Petri of rural Brandan-Evansville.
Pastor Sarah Taylor of CrossWind Lutheran Parish started the session by reading Psalm 46 and prayer. Then Anne and Pastor Dave explained that LCMC is Lutheran by confession, congregational in structure and free for mission in Christ. Their ten point presentation covered the benefits for pastors, benefits for your church, freedom in Christ, accountable to one another, rooted and grounded in scriptures and Lutheran confession working to fulfill the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations.
Then they answered questions for another hour. |

Standing Room Only
Glacial Hills Elementary School presented its annual Holiday Concert at the Starbuck Community Center on Thursday, December 10th. Despite the below zero temperatures, there were over 350 people in attendance to enjoy the musical offerings provided by the 100 students. The younger students began the evening by sharing songs in their slippers, pjs and colorful socks. The older students celebrated a holiday hoedown with Uncle Joe and the gang. There was also an investigation to determine who the real Santa Claus was. The band, including a few students from Cyrus, performed some traditional songs to showcase their talents.

Chronic diseases cause 7 in 10 deaths each year in the United States.
About 133 million Americans-nearly 1 in 2 adults-live with at least one chronic illness.

Music Department of Glacial Hills is asking for used musical instrubments
In a time when even more families are counting their pennies, Glacial Hills Elementary School Music Teacher Shari Opdahl is hoping a new instrument library can take some of the financial sting out of joining band.
The new library at GHES will give families an opportunity to rent a donated musical instrument for a nominal fee, rather than purchase a new or used instrument before joining band. In the past, Opdahl said there have be students who "want to play in band but can't afford an instrument." The new library will allow students who may not otherwise been able to join band, pick up an instrument and tap their musical talent.
To get the library off the ground, Opdahl is enlisting the service of the general public to lend the school any number of musical instruments.
Anyone who has a gently used instrument that is collecting more dust than exposure is being asked to lend the instrument to the new instrument library at GHES. The instruments lent to the school will be checked out to students who will pay a rental fee which will go toward the maintenance and upkeep of the donated instruments. The individuals who donate the instrument will still keep ownership of the instrument, and "they can come and pick up the instrument anytime they want," said Opdahl.
