The sixth graders at GHES had an amazing opportunity to compete at the Area II Jr. Envirothon.
The 6th Graders spent Wednesday, April 27th at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center near Spicer, MN, learning about forestry, aquatics, soils, wildlife, and estuaries. Students were given a test at each station worth 20 points. We earned 70/100 points. Overall our team placed seventh out of fourteen teams in the competition. We were extremely proud considering this was our first year in this event and we were unsure of what to expect. Competing teams were made up of five students in grades sixth-eighth. Our team consisted of six hard-working, intelligent sixth graders.
On the main GHES Jr. Envirothon Team were: Brock Lardy, Alicia Pederson, Drew Opdahl, Dylan Holmes, and Zach Copa. Jesse Johnson was our alternate. We were very proud of him because his team placed first in the Estuary Current Issues station. Kaley Poegel, who teaches 4th -6th science and is the Jr. Envirothon coach for this talented GHES team, had a blast preparing the students for this educational event and watching them compete!

Local Study Club Encourages Reading

Former members of the Starbuck Study Club donated money to Glacial Hills Elementary School and that donation was used to purchase books for the library. The students are excited to be able to read these during "I Love To Read Month". |

First Grade and Flat Stanley
In first grade we are sending out our Flat Stanley's this week! Our class is using the book Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown, to enhance our study of map skills. The main character of the story, Stanley, becomes flat when a bulletin board falls on him during the night. Luckily, Stanley is not hurt! Instead, he gets to take a round trip visit to California in an envelope (a trip that would otherwise be too costly to take by train or plane). The students all got to choose one person that they would like to send Flat Stanley to. Some of the places he is going are; Arizona, West Virginia, Illinois, Alaska, Washington D.C., and South Africa. We are really excited to get our Flat Stanley's returned to us to see all of the neat places that he went to.
A Visit from a Hero
For the past couple of weeks that students and staff at Glacial Hills Elementary School have been part of the Pennies for Patients campaign sponsored by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is the third year that the school has participated. The money raised goes toward funding research to find cures, and it also helps with expenses when a family member is going through treatment for the disease. This year we were visited by one of the Honored Heroes – Maddie Willcox - a leukemia survivor. Maddie is a 6th grader at Chaska Middle School East and is the granddaughter of Mrs. Foley, one of our substitute teachers. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2009, and just finished up her treatments in December. She came to share her story with the students, and to explain to them why the Pennies for Patients campaign is important. The students’ goal is to raise $500.

Office Update
Anne is now fully trained and working on her own when necessary, which is a big help as we are now able to be open 5 days a week. I am here Monday through Thursday and Anne is here Tuesday through Friday. We both work 8 - 4. It was a very busy holiday season with donations coming in to make every one's Christmas a little brighter. What a reminder of how rewarding this job is when someone comes in and begins to cry because they can receive a scarf, mittens or quilt for Christmas. We also had wonderful donations of toys so we got those out to families.
