Music Department of Glacial Hills is asking for used musical instrubments

GHESVetDy071109choir03_225In a time when even more families are counting their pennies, Glacial Hills Elementary School Music Teacher Shari Opdahl is hoping a new instrument library can take some of the financial sting out of joining band.

The new library at GHES will give families an opportunity to rent a donated musical instrument for a nominal fee, rather than purchase a new or used instrument before joining band. In the past, Opdahl said there have be students who "want to play in band but can't afford an instrument." The new library will allow students who may not otherwise been able to join band, pick up an instrument and tap their musical talent.

To get the library off the ground, Opdahl is enlisting the service of the general public to lend the school any number of musical instruments.

Anyone who has a gently used instrument that is collecting more dust than exposure is being asked to lend the instrument to the new instrument library at GHES. The instruments lent to the school will be checked out to students who will pay a rental fee which will go toward the maintenance and upkeep of the donated instruments. The individuals who donate the instrument will still keep ownership of the instrument, and "they can come and pick up the instrument anytime they want," said Opdahl.

While all instruments will be accepted in the new library, Opdahl said there is a big need for brass and woodwind instruments.

Anyone who is interested in donating an instrument to the music library can do so by contacting Opdahl at GHES at 239-3840.
