May 11, 2011Jr. Envirothon Garden Updates Breakfast and a Book ProgramThe sixth graders at GHES had an amazing opportunity to compete at the Area II Jr. Envirothon. The 6th Graders spent Wednesday, April 27th at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center near Spicer, MN, learning about forestry, aquatics, soils, wildlife, and estuaries. Students were given a test at each station worth 20 points. We earned 70/100 points. Overall our team placed seventh out of fourteen teams in the competition. We were extremely proud considering this was our first year in this event and we were unsure of what to expect. Competing teams were made up of five students in grades sixth-eighth. Our team consisted of six hard-working, intelligent sixth graders. On the main GHES Jr. Envirothon Team were: Brock Lardy, Alicia Pederson, Drew Opdahl, Dylan Holmes, and Zach Copa. Jesse Johnson was our alternate. We were very proud of him because his team placed first in the Estuary Current Issues station. Kaley Poegel, who teaches 4th -6th science and is the Jr. Envirothon coach for this talented GHES team, had a blast preparing the students for this educational event and watching them compete!Garden UpdatesWe still have lots of work to do in the garden if only the weather would let us! Once the garden dries up we will get it tilled and planted. The students have grown tomatoes, peppers and melons from seed and they are ready to be transplanted into a bigger space. The potatoes and onion sets are ready to go in the ground too. The new greenhouse is set up and ready to go.Gardening is a great way to spend time together as a family. It’s rewarding and it’s a fun way to burn off excess energy. Plus, it’s free entertainment! The work one puts in pays off enormously when the students get to eat all the healthy foods that they helped to grow. If you are able to help out in the garden this summer, Laura Wilson will be here on Wednesday evenings from about 5:30-7:00 to help out and direct the activity. If you are able to help just show up or contact Laura at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 320-808-0331. Breakfast and a Book
Over 75 guests took part in the Breakfast and a Book event held at GHE on Thursday, May 12th. Each student had the opportunity to invite a parent, grandparent or special friend to school for waffles and sausage. This was followed by each student being able to choose a book as a gift and then spend some time reading with his/her guest. |
