Everyone knows Cyrus as the little town on the way to Alexandria. Many people even play the Cyrus game on their drive out of Morris. The Cyrus game is a game where before you drive through the town, everyone tries to guess how many people will be outside in the town. As you drive through the town, you count the people outside, and whoever is closest wins. Yet there is much more going on in the little town of Cyrus than it may appear on a quick drive through. Cyrus is located in Pope County, and it is the home to just over 300 people.

So, I’ve been driving to Willmar on a weekly basis for the past two months, and on these scenic one-hour trips, I have gotten pretty familiar with our small town neighbors to the southeast that directly intersect Highway 9. One such town is that of dearest Clontarf, MN, population 173. Now, clearly the name “Clontarf” is in and of itself a win—it’s just so perfect. But I know you—you are skeptical of the actual town’s ability to live up to the promise of such a wonderfully unique name, especially because that town has less than 200 residents, according to the 2000 census. Fear not, my friend! Clontarf is bomb.

There are three factors that make Hancock a really decent place to explore. Fact One: There is a Dent and Bent store that sells canned and other grocery goods very cheaply because they’re slightly damaged or old. Fact Two: Buddies Bar and Grill is located in Hancock, and it’s pretty great. Fact Three: Hancock is only ten miles away, aka takes no time to get there, aka, if you go “around 55” I’ll say ten-ish minutes.
