Notes From the Capitol
By State Rep. Paul Anderson
The State Capitol is truly a unique place to be during the last week of session. Days are long, and night sessions roll up to – and then past – the midnight hour. Leadership on the floor offers a motion to extend the day past midnight, and away we go. We went to 1:30 in the morning earlier this week, and nearly 1 a.m. last night (this morning, May 13) before we called it a day.
Another trademark of last week-sessions mirrors the old adage of “hurry up and wait.” Recesses are called, during which time leadership from the Legislature meets with the governor or his staff. Oftentimes, those meetings last longer than anticipated. For example, one night earlier this week, we took a recess to grab a bite for supper and were told to be back at 6:30 for the evening session. People slowly trickled back around that time, but it wasn’t until after 8 p.m. that we got the session going again.
One of the bills passed in the House earlier in the week, commonly referred to as the “Game and Fish Bill,” has several provisions that will interest local sportsmen. The quartering of deer that has been tagged properly would now be allowed under a provision of this bill. Along with several other stipulations, the quarters must be presented together when the animal is registered.

27th Annual Lefse Dagen will be held on May 15th
Twenty-seven years after Starbuck etched its name in Norwegian folklore by creating the World's Largest Lefse, the Starbuck Depot will commemorate the event by hosting Lefse Dagen XXIV. The annual open house, which is held on the same grounds of the record-setting accomplishment, is set for Saturday, May 15.
Throughout the event, the Starbuck Depot and Starbuck School Museum will be open to the public, as will the new Skoglund/Ness building which houses the former Standard Lumber office, Dr. Giesen display, and the old Starbuck Theatre equipment. The buildings will be open for display from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
In addition to the open houses, Lefse Dagen will pay tribute to the Norwegian delicatessen which shares its same name by having a "Roll Your Own Lefse" course in the Starbuck Depot. The course will get underway at 11 a.m. and Jeannie Pladsen and Diane Pederson will be on hand to help people learn how to roll out lefse of their own.

After protecting and serving the area for 27 years, Pope County Sheriff Tom Larson recently announced that he will not run for re-election in November.
Larson, who turned 50 in March, said, "I'm old enough to retire, but still young enough to start a second career."
After serving as the local sheriff for 12 years, he'll hang up his hat this December.
When asked why he chose not to run again, with a very tender tone in his voice, he replied, "Well, I realized that I've very much neglected my family for [the sheriff's office] family. My youngest just turned 16 on Saturday, and I'd like to spend some time doing things with him," Larson said last week.
Path that led him here

Candidate Filing Period Begins May 18
Secretary of State Mark Ritchie reminds Minnesotans interested in running for public office that the candidate-filing period for federal, state, county and some local offices begins Tuesday, May 18, at 8 a.m. and closes Tuesday, June 1, at 5 p.m.
The filing period was moved up from July to May when legislation was passed to hold the state primary on August 10, to provide military and overseas voters more time to cast their ballots and return them by election day. The new law requires that the state provide a minimum 45-day absentee ballot window prior to a regularly scheduled primary or general election.
Requirements for filing vary depending on the office, whether the candidate is a member of a major political party, a minor political party, or an independent, and whether the office is partisan or nonpartisan. Candidates for state Senate, House of Representatives, judicial and constitutional offices have a choice to either file with the secretary of state or in their county of residence. Candidates for U.S. Congress must file with the secretary of state. Candidates for county offices must file with their county auditor. Filing dates may vary for candidates for municipal and school district offices.
