Report on the April 17th Star Party
Great skies, and new and familiar faces made for a fun time at our first star party of the 2010 season at Glacial Lakes State Park!
We had first-timers (with us, at least) who brought a nice 12" SCT with 2" eyepieces. It's always great to have more 'scopes at the star parties. We also had visitors from Two Harbors - quite a drive, but I think we made it worth thier time!
It's always disconcerting when it's been crystal clear all day long and then while you're driving to the park for the star party, the clouds start rolling in. But sunset came at 8:11, and then the clouds went away and it was pretty clear the rest of the night.
We looked at quite a few things: early on we took a look at Saturn and a few of its moons, and Mars and Venus. The moon is always best looked at when it's in a crescent phase - we identified several of the large craters on the moon. We also looked at the galaxy pair M81 and M82 in in Ursa Major (the Great Bear, which is what the Big Dipper is part of), and M13, the Hercules Cluster in the constellation - you guessed it - Hercules.
There were a number of other things we looked at as well, but as the night went on it got fairly cool. We decided it was probably time to go when we noticed that the dew on our plastic star chart was icing up!
Thanks everyone for a great time - the people at the events are just as exciting and interesting as the things we look at in our equipment! We hope to see you next month!
Next Star Party Saturday, May 15th
Come out for a great evening of viewing! Sunset is at 8:46pm. We'll be there to start setting up about 1/2 hour before that.
Once again, Mars and Saturn will be out and high in the sky, so if you missed us last month, you'll have another chance to look at Saturn's rings again. The moon will be a thin sliver of a crescent, so that will be interesting to look at as well.
Come on out and join us! |

City finances remain a work in progress
Just one-and-a-half years after the City of Starbuck was forced to raise its tax levy by 75 percent, increase fees at Hobo Park and the Starbuck Marina, and cut down on much of its spending, the financial outlook for the city has improved. While the financial outlook may be better than it was a year ago, a long road to recovery remains ahead for the city's finances according to the 2009 year end audit.
"In summary you did a nice turnaround from 2008-2009, but of course you are still not out of the woods yet," said David Euerle of Westberg-Eischens auditing firm.

City Council proceeds with Sewer and Water project
There were few items on the agenda at the Cyrus City Council at their regular meeting, April 13, that required action by the council. Among the items on the agenda were placing port-a-pots in the park, a request from the school for funds for a project and election judge pay.
A letter from the CMST school requesting assistance for the Accelerated Reading Program was presented. After some discussion. A council member made a motion to donate $500 from the Runestone Telecom funds. All council members felt the program was certainly a worthy one in giving young children the enthusiasm and encouragement to read.

Olson said the acquisition is a win-win for everybody involved.
First National Bank in Starbuck may soon have a new owner-but don't expect to see any changes to the staff, name, and decorations at the longtime Starbuck-based bank.
According to First National Bank President Mark Olson, SKBHC Holdings LLC has recently applied with the Federal Reserve Bank to purchase First National Bank and its holdings. The purchase means First National Bank would essentially become a subsidiary of SKBHC Holdings, but customers will likely notice little or no change in the day-to-day operations at the bank. Olson said everything from the employees, including himself as bank president, to the name itself will remain the same even after the purchase of First National Bank by SKBHC Holdings.
"They're going to buy the bank, but nothing is going to change," said Olson.

Water issues of some kind were the items topping the agenda of the Lowry City Council at their monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 6.
Jeremy Anderson of Design Tree updated the council on the pre-construction conference which was held on March 18. He said no big surprises had come from this which was good. Quam had given them the list of all sub contractors for the project. Anderson noted that most of the sub-contractors were local. Work is scheduled to begin the week of May 24 and they will start south of Isabella and work toward Drury then to Poplar and begin to work east.
At this time Anderson said he was waiting for a schedule of the pond construction but felt he would be getting a date fairly soon.

No Longer a conflict with Mother's Day
Minnesota's 2010 walleye opener will be Saturday, May 15 - one week later than usual.
The late start means that the walleye opener will not coincide with Mother's Day which is Sunday, May 9.
That means moms will rejoice and anglers will have to muster up some patience.
State law sets the walleye opener two Saturdays prior to Memorial Day weekend, which does not occur until the last weekend of May this year.
Larry Jensen, owner of Minnewaska Bait, said it's way too early to tell how the later fishing opener will affect his business and local fishing.
"It all depends on the weather and water temperature. In past years when we get the opener the first weekend in May, Minnewaska has not been a good walleye lake. But this year, with the opener being a little later, we may hit it right on the nose. That's a long range prediction, though."
