Minnesota cities and counties will be spared further cuts in Local Government Aid (LGA) later this month. That announcement came Dec. 8 from Gov. Pawlenty when he said that he will work with the Legislature to resolve the budget shortfall facing the state and not reduce the December payment. He cautioned, however, that if the Legislature is unable to pass “appropriate budget reductions,” future aid payments would likely be reduced.
Designed to help locations with lower tax capacities, LGA has become a significant part of local government budgets, especially for cities and towns. According to information from the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities, 65 percent of the total LGA distribution goes to cities in greater Minnesota. On the other side of the ledger, 92 cities – including many suburbs in the metro area – and all Minnesota townships receive no LGA.
So, later this month, $437 million in LGA and County Program Aid will be distributed. Townships receive what’s called Market Value Homestead Credit, and those checks are received in October and December.

Chronic diseases cause 7 in 10 deaths each year in the United States.
About 133 million Americans-nearly 1 in 2 adults-live with at least one chronic illness.

Music Department of Glacial Hills is asking for used musical instrubments
In a time when even more families are counting their pennies, Glacial Hills Elementary School Music Teacher Shari Opdahl is hoping a new instrument library can take some of the financial sting out of joining band.
The new library at GHES will give families an opportunity to rent a donated musical instrument for a nominal fee, rather than purchase a new or used instrument before joining band. In the past, Opdahl said there have be students who "want to play in band but can't afford an instrument." The new library will allow students who may not otherwise been able to join band, pick up an instrument and tap their musical talent.
To get the library off the ground, Opdahl is enlisting the service of the general public to lend the school any number of musical instruments.
Anyone who has a gently used instrument that is collecting more dust than exposure is being asked to lend the instrument to the new instrument library at GHES. The instruments lent to the school will be checked out to students who will pay a rental fee which will go toward the maintenance and upkeep of the donated instruments. The individuals who donate the instrument will still keep ownership of the instrument, and "they can come and pick up the instrument anytime they want," said Opdahl.

Congratulations to Madi on making it to the State meet and running a courageous race.
Having run in poor weather conditions for most of the fall cross country season, Madi Sachs found herself under the weather again.
Madi competed in the State Cross Country meet on Saturday in Northfield at St. Olaf College on a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the low 60s, but she struggled in the meet, still feeling the effects after becoming sick Thursday evening. Madi ran a temperature of 102 degrees, but competed hard in spite of her poor health, finishing in 118th place with a time of 17:21.
"I was very proud of Madi for even running in this meet, she showed how competitive she is," said coach Bob Mork. "Madi had a very successful year, winning six of the nine meets she competed in, and I look for her to pick up where she left off next season."
Congratulations to Madi on making it to the State meet and running a courageous race. |
