Winterama gears up for Feb. 11 festivities

polarp-ashleyjimchan_250-307The 15th annual Winterama celebration is coming up fast. Festivities take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood, kicking off with a noon burger special. Next up are the kids’ games, running from 12:30-2:30 p.m. outside the ballroom on beautiful Lake Minnewaska.

Kids’ games include a nickel pickup, minnow races, a fishing booth, ring toss, turkey bowling, saucer races, a hockey shoot-out, mini golf on the ice, snowshoe races and a free-play snow area. More games may be added, according to Jim Palmer of Glenwood & Beyond.

While in past years, kids have earned small prizes for individual games, this year, Palmer said Glenwood & Beyond decided to try something different. A $5 wristband buys kids unlimited access to all the games. Each time they complete a game, a hash mark will be made on the child’s wristband. At 2:30, kids can turn in their wristbands for coupons—one coupon for each hash mark. Those coupons will then be placed in a drawing held around 2:30-2:45, giving kids chances to win larger prizes donated by area businesses. “That way parents don’t have to deal with cash and tickets and mittens,” said Palmer.

Also new this year, some of the games will be held in a large tent—a way to stay toasty even if the thermometer plunges.

And speaking of plunging… the ever-popular Polar Plunge follows the kids’ games at 3 p.m. The Plunge is a fundraiser for Waterama; last year Minnewaska’s icy waters took in 52 brave jumpers who raised money through sponsorships to support Waterama activities. If you’re interested in taking the plunge this year, visit www.waterama.org and contact one of this year’s Waterama brass.

"If the world is cold make it your business to build fires" - Horace Traubel

Things have been going smoothly in the office, but hectic. I'm sorry it took me so long to get an update out but here you go.
The needs have been high this winter, thanks to the many donations I have been able to get most needs met.  Some exciting news we received yesterday: Sheila Korby has been named the new Executive Director of Someplace Safe. Sheila has been a manager since before I began with the agency. Her knowledge and passion will serve the agency well, I believe.

Ladies of All Ages Tea
It's that time of the year again. I am excited to announce that Nashville Recording Artist, Connie Lee will be performing at the Tea this year. I am very excited she has agreed to do this for us. So plans have begun with the Tea happening on April 22nd at Lakeside Ballroom from 1-3. Things needed for the tea are hostesses to set and decorate tables, servers, baked goods, teacups, prizes for the teacups, greeters, and organizers. If there is anything you can help with please let me know or if you want to buy tickets just call or email.

Action Day
We will be taking a bus to Action Day to End Violence on March 6th. FOCUS kids from the High School will be going with, we will be picking up more people in Alexandria and Sauk Centre. This is a day we meet with our representatives to talk about what's happening with bills related to Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. There is also a rally in the Capital Rotunda at 12 with speakers and a time to remember those who lost their lives to Domestic Violence in 2011. If anyone is interested in going with please let me know.

Office Needs
I have a couple of people coming in to sort donations, add Tom's Receipts, write Thank You's and help with events. This has been a huge help, if anyone else is interested let me know.
Currently the office is in need of:
Tom's Cards       Gas Cards      Feminine products       pots and pans     Small appliances(toasters, coffe pots, can openers)
The list is short this time as there has been some terrific donations. I have gotten furniture steadily this winter thanks to the milder temps, these items do go out almost as fast as they come in so if you are looking to get rid of basic necessity furniture please check with me.

I will send out the flyer about the tea in the beginning of March for a reminder or if you wish to copy and post somewhere that would be wonderful.

Thanks for all you do,
Beth Peltier

Glacial Hills Gazette  2-1-12

xmas-party_2011-12-204_500-2454th-6th Graders Enjoy Luthercrest:  On Jan. 19-20 the GHES 4th – 6th graders, along with Mrs. Poegel, Mrs. Balog, Mrs. Mathias, Mr. Harrison, and Mr. O’Neill, spent two days and one night enjoying the environment at Luthercrest near Alexandria. They participated in more than 12 different activities including: tree identification, pioneer challenge, the pond in winter, Native Americans, Alpha Wolf game, bears, ecosystems, animal tracking, and winter survival in the wilderness. All of the students enjoyed the survival challenge the most.  They were divided into groups of 4, and given a shovel, a tarp, a length of rope, a can, and 3 matches. They had 20 minutes to build a fire, keep it going long enough to melt a can full of snow, and build a shelter. The also made dream catchers, built fires with flint and steel, and got to visit with the live animals. The trip was a huge success, even though the 19th was the coldest day of the winter with temperatures of -17!

K-3rd Graders travel to St. John’s to see Winnie-the-Pooh Onstage:  On Friday, Jan. 20th the students and staff rode the bus to St. John’s University to see the live performance of Winnie-the-Pooh. The trip was funded by money raised selling pizzas. Students commented that it was fun to see the characters on stage, and it was different than watching on TV or at the movies.

Glacial Hills Elementary School Establishes Endowment

Awards season isn't only in Hollywood right now. Here in west central Minnesota, West Central Initiative (WCI) is awarding a share of $75,000 to the Glacial Hills Elementary School Foundation for successfully meeting WCI's 25th Anniversary Endowment Challenge.

In the spring of 2011, WCI launched the challenge to encourage its component funds (funds set up by and for communities and organizations, and administered by WCI) to create or increase a permanent endowment fund by raising at least $10,000 by Dec. 31, 2011.

The Glacial Hills Elementary School Foundation is one of 15 component funds to successfully meet the challenge. The fund will receive $5,000 from WCI for its endowment.

"Even though we don't have a trophy to hand out, we still want to recognize the outstanding performance of the Glacial Hills Elementary School Foundation's advisory committee," said Kim Embretson, WCI's vice president of development. "Because of their efforts, donations made to the foundation's permanent endowment fund stay invested to keep producing income for grants year after year for the Glacial Hills."

paul_anderson_150Town hall meetings have been scheduled for Sauk Centre and Glenwood in District 13A. Senator Joe Gimse and I will host the gatherings, in Sauk Centre this Saturday and in Glenwood the following week. Both will start at 8:30. Locations are the Lynx National Golf Course in Sauk Centre Feb. 4th, and at the Glenwood Retirement Home the following Saturday, Feb. 11th.

After a short opening-day session Jan. 24th in the House of Representatives, our Education Finance Committee held its first meeting later that same afternoon. The bill we debated dealt with changing the way local levy referendum dollars are allocated when charter schools are located within the boundaries of a school district. Under current law and based on student numbers, the state-equalized portion of referendum dollars goes to charter schools in the district, while all of the locally-raised dollars stay with the school district.

It was argued by those favoring the change that since referendums are based on per-pupil funding amounts all the money raised should follow students who may be attending charter schools within the district. I raised the point that since it's the district who conducts referendum elections, and because voters have given their approval based on the assumption that all referendum dollars would be going to the district, to change the funding stream now would not be what district residents originally voted for.

paul_anderson_150Action in the areas of government reform and job creation are at the top of the list for many here in St. Paul, as we start the new legislative session.  It seems both the Governor and legislative leaders agree on that premise so, at least starting off, there seems to be more of a spirit of compromise. I find that encouraging.

There will be work done in the area of tax reform, specifically property taxes.  The major change put into effect last year removing the Homestead Credit and replacing it with an exclusion will probably stay in place.  We will work in the area of commercial property taxes and put together a plan to gradually reduce and eliminate the tax, which is collected on all commercial/industrial property in the state and sent directly to St. Paul.

There is also discussion about streamlining our entire property tax system and its multiple classifications of property.  We have probably the most complicated system in the nation with over 50 different classifications.  It's hard for local officials to explain the system, and even harder for residents to understand it.
