Starbuck Times Editor Chad Koenen has left his position with the newspaper as he ventures into an opportunity to publish the Citizens Advocate in Henning, Minn.
As he packed up his office last week, he said, "Leaving the Starbuck area was a difficult decision to make. I have enjoyed the past three years working at the Starbuck Times and will look forward to continuing the friendships I have made, in the future."
Times Publisher Tim Douglass said, "We were sorry to see Chad go, but he is pursuing something he has wanted to do and we wish him well in his new endeavor. He has done a great job for the newspaper and the community and he will be missed."

Preschoolers go to school in new space
During the last few weeks while kids were soaking up the last moments of summer vacation, Rainbows and Rhymes Preschool staff have packed up their classrooms and moved to a new location just a few blocks away.
Next Tuesday, Rainbows and Rhymes will open its school inside the Glacial Hills Elementary School building on Starbuck's west side.
"We've been trying for a couple years to join up with Glacial Hills," said preschool teacher Marla Watson. "I think it's a positive move; it will give the students an opportunity to interact with other school kids."
Although the schools share space, they remain separate entities.

The Starbuck City Council will go back to the drawing board-well sort of.
With a number of area township officials in attendance, the Starbuck City Council agreed to take another look at how it bills area townships for fire protection. In the past the city and townships split the cost of fire protection 50/50 with the city paying 50 percent of the cost, and the townships dividing up the remaining 50 percent of the cost.
However, as the need for fire protection outside of the city limits remains high, and as costs associated with the fire department continue to rise, the council said it wanted to take a look at moving to a formula based on time and value to even out the cost of the fire department with those who use it the most.

Celebrating 125 years
A day-long celebration of the 125th anniversary of Glenwood United Parish attracted many current and past members of the local church.
The celebration started in the morning with the worship service, provided a noon lunch and an afternoon program.
Glenwood United Parish represents the 1971 union of Glenwood United Methodist Church (founded in 1881) and the Union Congregational United Church of Christ of Glenwood (founded in 1885). Before that, in 1966, members of the Presbyterian church of Sedan had joined the Union Congregational Church and members of the Grove Lake United Methodist Church had joined the Glenwood United Methodist Church.

Pope County has entered into a new Joint Powers agreement which will create a new Community Health Board with a program implementation date of January 2011.

Currently, Pope County partners with Grant, Stevens and Traverse Counties to form the Mid-State Community Health Board, but as of January 1, a new five-county Community Health Board will be formed which includes Douglas County.

Maanum's Named Farm Family Of The Year
For the Maanum family, farming is much more than a way to pay the bills-it is a way of life.
Now in its third and fourth generations, the Maanum family farm has been a staple in the rural Farwell area for over 100 years.
The original house that Lyle Maanum's grandpa built when he purchased the homestead between 1908-1909 still towers over the farm site. In its shadows the Maanum family scurry across the farm site getting ready to feed cattle, hogs and prepare for the fall harvest.

No changes for 2010-2011 activities
During a work session Thursday night, the Minnewaska School Board brainstormed about the problems, possible solutions and criteria for cutting some activities for the 2011-2012 school year.
According to Minnewaska's Activities Director Bill Mills, approximately $30,000 must be found for the district to continue to offer 20 activities - everything from speech to baseball - in the 2011-2012 school year. Without an additional $30,000, cuts must be made to the activities budget.
The board hosted a public informational meeting last month where dozens of people spoke out to against the potential cuts.
