The Pope County Historical Society holds its annual meeting on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00.  Plan to attend.

From the Glenwood Herald, September 17, 1909

pchs_whit-ber-lk_ind-mund_250The Puritan Art Circle meets with Mrs. Nason next Saturday.  This is the first meeting of the year.

Cora Wollan began a term of school in the district east of the Soo depot last Monday. She stays at home and drives the distance back and forth morning and evening.

Mr. & Mrs. M.A. Wollan, Mr. & Mrs. B.O. Wollan and C.T. Wollan took an auto trip to Sisseton, S.D., on Sunday morning, returning Monday.  They visited acquaintances at Sisseton and also were present at a wedding.  Mike says that on the way back they found, when they got as far as Morris, that the auto had brought them forward a little faster than they expected, and so in order not to make it appear that the journey had been made in too short a time they decided to take in Hancock on the way.  They were all enthusiastic about the appearance of the country between here and Sisseton.  Some of the party had gone across this country many years ago.  C.T. Wollan crossed this same part of the country with a surveying party in 1868 and says he never expected such changes as he saw.  The land seems very fertile and the crops are excellent.

The Brown Shoe Co. of St. Louis has undoubtedly discovered the most striking way of advertising its wares of any concern of its kind in the world.  Buster Brown and his dog Tige are sent around by this firm and since Buster is no "spring chicken" he is certainly able to educate the people up to buying the Brown Co.'s shoes.  Last Wednesday afternoon he appeared on a platform before the Fremad Association's store and after giving his biography in detail he gave the children who had gathered instruction in how and where to buy shoes in the same manner as a teacher would instruct her pupils.  He had souvenirs to give out as prizes to the children for learning their lessons well.

The Pope County Fair for 1909 is now a thing of the past.  The most interesting feature of the program was apparently the races as the crowds were always largest in the vicinity of the grandstand.  The main features of interest on Friday afternoon were the races and the ball game.  The ball game was between Reno and Westport.  Reno's battery was W. Fisher catcher and Ben Rice pitcher, while L. Breeze and W. Nelson filled these positions for Westport.  The final score was 6 to 6.  About the fair as a whole we can not but say that it was a success.  Everything went off very smoothly and the toot of the Merry-Go-Round was not silenced til late at night on all three days.

No doubt you are well aware of the fact that there is a new store soon to be opened up in Glenwood with a strictly new and up-to-date stock of dry goods, clothing, ladies' cloaks, suits, skirts, waists and petticoats, furnishings for men, women and children, shoes for the whole family, and will be sold at prices never before heard of.  All we ask of you is to wait for the opening day of Hershman's New Department Store.  The date will be announced later.  Yours for business, Geo. B. Hershman.
