Amundson Hunting report:
Pheasants Ducks & Geese Deer
Pheasant hunting was very slow this fall in Pope County, there are some birds out there, but the long snowy winter of 2010 and cool spring did not produce many young birds. The guys with dogs that hit the heavy cover are shooting a few roosters. Next year could be much better as it is near Christmas and we have had mild weather and no snow!
Duck & Goose Hunting: Was actually a little better this fall. There was a lot of water in Pope County and a decent number of ducks and geese were in the area. Goose hunting was pretty good for the hunters with nice decoy spreads.
Deer hunting: Pretty slow year in Pope County. Some nice bucks were shot, but overall deer numbers were down. Personally, I hunted quite a bit, saw enough deer to make it interesting, but the numbers are down from 5-10 years ago. There are definitely some giant bucks in our county though. Year in and year out, Pope County produces a handful of eye popping racks with big body size!
Next year should be better as this winter appears to be pro-deer!
Fishing as of late December has been good on Minnewaska. Walleyes are biting in 14-20 feet with a few caught in shallow water. Some panfish are biting on the Glenwood end. Other lakes such as Emily, Gilchrist and Reno have been pretty good for walleyes in December as well.
Thanks, Kurt Amundson
